Reading Mode is the app's default view. Microsoft Immersive Reader is an optional reading experience you can open from the reading toolbar.
Choose the text you want to read
Open a reading. If it contains Original text and Explanation, select the version you want to use.
Tap the book icon
In the toolbar, choose Open Immersive Reader, the book-pages icon beside Reading appearance. This feature needs an active membership and an internet connection.
Review Microsoft's sharing permission
The first time, the app asks to share the selected reading's title and text with Microsoft. Choose Allow & open reader to continue, or Not now to stay in Reading Mode. This is separate from your OpenAI photo permission.
Return when you are ready
Close Immersive Reader to return to Reading Mode. Your saved reading stays in the library. If the reader cannot open, use Back to Reading Mode and check your connection and membership.
You choose whether to use it
You can read saved text and use the app's built-in Listen without sharing readings with Microsoft. Manage this permission in Settings → AI & privacy.
